Why Denim Became a Fashion Staple

It’s hard to imagine a wardrobe without denim.

Today, we see it everywhere: jeans, jackets, skirts, shirts, and even accessories. But denim wasn't originally designed to be fashionable. Its story began with practicality.

The word “denim” is believed to come from serge de Nîmes, referring to a sturdy fabric associated with Nîmes, France. Over time, denim became especially well known for its durability and ability to withstand everyday wear, making it a natural choice for workwear.

In the 19th century, denim became closely associated with work clothes in the United States. Miners, railroad workers, farmers, and other laborers needed clothing that could handle demanding conditions. When riveted denim work trousers were patented by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis in 1873, they helped establish the style that would eventually become the modern blue jean.

For a long time, jeans were seen primarily as practical clothing. Then something changed.

During the 20th century, denim began moving beyond the workplace and into popular culture. Jeans became associated with youth, music, film, and a more relaxed approach to dressing. By the latter half of the century, they had become much more than workwear.

And that's really what makes denim so interesting. It has managed to evolve without losing the qualities that made it useful in the first place. It's durable, familiar, and easy to wear, but it can also feel completely different depending on how it's designed and styled.
